Music at Sylvan

Music plays a vital role in a community by serving as a powerful tool for connection, expression, and cultural preservation. It acts as a universal language that transcends barriers, fostering a sense of unity and belonging among diverse groups. Through shared experiences at concerts, festivals, and community events, music brings people together, creating bonds and building social cohesion. Additionally, it provides a platform for individuals to express their emotions, ideas, and cultural heritage, promoting understanding and empathy within the community. Music also supports the local economy by inspiring creativity and providing opportunities for local artists and businesses. Overall, music enriches the community by enhancing cultural vibrancy and contributing to a shared sense of identity and purpose.

Sylvan United Church provides a charming and intimate setting where music can flourish. We are pleased to offer our venue for rent to various music studios throughout the Cowichan Valley. Whether for rehearsals, concerts, or recitals, our space is ideally suited for smaller groups. Additionally, Sylvan United Church actively collaborates with Music at Sylvan to host concert performances, enhancing the musical experience for both artists and audiences alike.

Artistry & Outreach Concert

Artistry & Outreach (A&O) is a community project led by Eve and Rykie where they bring together local musicians to create concert programmes to tour to local care homes. The music is chosen based on age and cognitive demographic of the audience, knowing that the music part of the brain is deep rooted with long lasting connections to the music of one’s youth, while also finding challenging and rewarding options for the musicians.

A&O uses Sylvan for rehearsals and in exchange hosts a concert where all proceeds are donated to Sylvan. We are proud to support their mission and want to welcome our Sylvan community and our wider community to this relaxed and inclusive afternoon performance.

Meeting Mozart Concert

Sylvan United Church is eagerly anticipating the return of the Victoria Baroque Youth Orchestra this May for “Meeting Mozart” a programme filled with some of WA Mozart’s best loved works!

The 4pm Children’s Concert shar s a shorter programme with participatory elements and crafts for kids who like to keep their hands busy while they listen.

The 7pm Evening Concert presents the full programme in a traditional but intimate setting.

This programme has the Victoria Baroque Youth Orchestra playing Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, but also invites local students – Rachel Brittan and Zachary Kuo playing Mozart’s first composition, Minuet in G Major, K. 1 and Ashley Pepper playing a selection of Mozart’s Variations on Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.

The 4pm concert will also feature the Cowichan String Academy ensemble so primary level musicians can see other primary level musicians in action.

There will be three Mozart/DaPonte opera selections and the Ave Verum Corpus and Lacrimosa featuring the Artistry & Outreach vocal ensemble.

Tickets are available from Eventbrite and through the Sylvan office.
