The Sacrament of Baptism
Baptism celebrates God’s initiative and our response: it is God’s “Yes” to us and our “Yes” to God. It is a sign of the Divine-human covenant. In Baptism, God’s grace is recognized; the flowing water symbolizes God’s faithful love for us, which is available to always renew us in life. Baptism is that moment when we become who we are destined to be: “children of God,” and disciples of Jesus. As initiation into the Body of Christ, the Church, it is an act of welcoming, blessing and belonging.
Sylvan United Church offers baptism to all ages. We believe the gift of God’s love doesn’t depend on our ability to understand it, so we baptize people as infants right up through adulthood. Baptism in the United Church is recognized by all denominations of the Christian church that practice infant baptism. Similarly, if people have already been baptized in another church, the United Church recognizes their baptism and welcomes them as Christians.
Please call the office and speak with the Rev. Dr. Murray Groom to learn more about Baptism and how we, as a community of faith, can support you and your family in this important moment.
